Are We Fabricators? Or Are We Welders?

June 24, 2016

Above is a sheet of 3/8” thick steel that has just been cut out on our plasma table. It’s a dirty machine, but it is an efficient one. Simply download a drawing from our drafting software and let it go to work. The finished pieces take a little cleaning up and then they are ready to be formed. Below you can see a stack of formed parts, along with the machine that did the work in the background. We have 320 tons worth of power with a full set of CNC controls courtesy of Accurpress sitting there ready to take on the challenge.

Then in this case it’s time to fit them up. A simple jig welded onto one of our heavy welding tables and they start coming together. Now we are welding, sort of…. In this instance we are just tacking the components together, and getting them ready for the final full welding process. It’s all part of the fabrication process and it’s not all about the welding. All the processes have to be done, and done well to kick out a quality product.

On the other hand, welding happens to be mine, and most people’s favorite part of the process. Its unfortunate that I don’t get to do it much anymore!

So when it comes to defining who we are it’s a trick question. We are proud to say we are welders, but we do so much more than weld, and we are proud to say we are fabricators, but it’s just more fun to be a welder. I think we will just have to be both!
